Polyester Gelcoat is the very upper layer of the GRP Composite System. It has a number of functions. - Provide a smooth, glossy finish to the composite, hiding the glass and resin structure
- Add water and chemical resistance to the composite
When laminating or laying up in a closed tool, regular gelcoat may be used. However if making a repair, or laying a flat roof or even making a fish pond where the gelcoat is exposed to the air during cure, it is essential to add a wax additive. The purpose of the wax additive is to provide an effective barrier between uncured gelcoat and the atmosphere. Failure to do so will result in a tacky finish. The Gelcoat then carries a new name "Flow Coat" or "Top Coat" If you are making repairs to your boat/car/pond and are applying the gelcoat layer LAST then you must select this on the product page for Wax Additive. The cost of this is marginal but it is essential. We also offer white gels and flowcoats from stock, the same option appears below the product description.
